What it is

Replacement means removing the old unit and installing a new one that fits your home, fuel and hot water demand. A proper install also covers the parts around the heater: venting, gas line, shut-offs, drain pan and safety valves.

We install:

  • Standard gas tank water heaters
  • Standard electric tank water heaters
  • Tankless water heaters, including conversion from a tank
  • Hybrid (heat pump) water heaters

And the work around the unit:

  • Thermal expansion tank installation
  • Gas line upgrades and modifications
  • Exhaust venting installation and repair
  • Water heater code compliance upgrades
  • Emergency shut-off valve installation
  • Drip pan and drain line installation

Signs you need it

  • The tank body is leaking
  • The unit is old and failing more often
  • Rust-colored hot water, or rust at the tank
  • Not enough hot water for the household, even after repairs
  • Repair costs are stacking up
  • You are changing fuel type or moving to tankless or a heat pump unit

If you are not sure, start with the guide to repair or replace.

What a technician does

  1. Sizes the new unit to your household and checks the fuel, venting and space.
  2. Shuts off and drains the old unit and removes it.
  3. Sets the new unit and connects water, gas or electric, and venting.
  4. Adds or updates the parts the install needs, such as an expansion tank, T&P discharge line, drip pan or shut-off valve.
  5. Fills, tests and checks for leaks and, on gas units, for proper venting and combustion.
  6. Reviews the settings and operation with you.

What affects cost

  • Unit type: gas tank, electric tank, tankless or heat pump
  • Size and brand
  • Venting, gas line and electrical changes the new unit needs
  • Code upgrades, expansion tank, drip pan or shut-off valves
  • Access and the location of the unit
  • Removing and disposing of the old unit

We give a quote for your specific house after we see what the install involves. We do not post prices here.

Repair or replace

If the old unit is fixable and young, repair may cost less. If it is old, leaking or failing repeatedly, replacement usually wins. Compare both on the repair or replace page, and see what drives cost.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install heat pump (hybrid) water heaters?

Yes. We install hybrid and heat pump water heaters, as well as gas and electric tank units and tankless units.

Does a new water heater need an expansion tank?

Often, when the home has a closed plumbing system, such as with a backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve. We check this during the install and tell you what your plumbing needs.

Can you switch me from a tank to tankless?

Yes. Conversion can involve the gas line, venting and water connections. We look at the house first.

What happens to my old water heater?

We remove it as part of the replacement.
